If there is a suspicion of scientific misconduct, it can be reported via TUD’s digital reporting system. In addition, the Office for Good Scientific Practice and the faculty representatives for early-career researchers are available as points of contact. Staff and members of TUD also have the option of consulting the ombudsperson in person at short notice. Alternatively, the nationwide committee “Ombudsman for Science” established by the German Research Foundation (DFG) can also be contacted.

It is deemed scientific misconduct when false statements are made intentionally or through gross negligence, when the intellectual property of third parties is violated, or when the research activities of others are significantly impaired. Serious violations include, for example, the fabrication or falsification of research results as well as plagiarism.

The investigation and sanctioning of rule violations are carried out in accordance with the Statutes on Ensuring Good Scientific Practice, Preventing Scientific Misconduct, and Handling Violations (GSP Statutes) of June 1, 2022. § 9 of the GSP Statutes defines the acts that constitute scientific misconduct.

Scientific misconduct occurs in particular when, in a context relevant to science,  
  • false statements are made intentionally or negligently,
  • intellectual property or other third-party scientific achievements are exploited without authorization,
  • the research activities of others are impaired,
  • joint responsibility for scientific misconduct or other breaches of duty can be attributed, or
  • a criminal offense or administrative offense is committed.
